Program Overview

The Homeland Security (formerly Security and Safety Leadership) program is designed to meet the professional development needs of individuals involved in the public or private safety sectors in Washington, D.C., Maryland and Virginia. These are professionals with experience in law enforcement, emergency management, corporate security, transportation security, fire service, public safety, public health preparedness or the military.

The objective of the program is to contribute to the professional development of safety professionals through analysis of a wide range of homeland security issues, policies and practices. Students in this degree program develop competencies and knowledge relating to:

  • Homeland security strategy and policy development
  • Emergency response
  • Inter-agency cooperation
  • Leadership and performance management
  • Managing organizational change
  • Intelligence and strategic analysis
  • Cybersecurity

This program is appropriate for professionals wishing to pursue a public safety master's degree.

Area of focus options include Strategic Security and Strategic Cybesecurity Enforcement.  Course options and class schedules vary by location.

  • Blended delivery combines classroom instruction with online delivery via Blackboard, GW’s Web-based educational platform.


Admission Requirements

Admission deadlines:

Fall – June 1
Spring - November 1

Recommendations required:

Two (2) recommendations (preferably one from a current supervisor).  Recommendations must include a separate sheet (preferably on official stationary) addressing the four questions found in the recommendation form.  Detailed answers must be provided addressing the applicant’s professional abilities, personal qualities, career potential, and potential to be successful in a graduate-level program.

Prior academic records:

Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript.  Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended should be uploaded to your online application.  Official transcripts are required only of applicants who are offered admission.

Transcripts from institutions outside the United States must be accompanied by an official transcript evaluation from an accredited independent evaluating agency. Please be sure you request a detailed, course-by-course evaluation that includes all course titles, credit hours, grade-point average (GPA), United States degree equivalency, and date of degree conferral. Please see the list of acceptable foreign credential evaluation services.

Statement of purpose:

In an essay of 250-500 words, state your purpose in undertaking graduate study in this field and describe your academic objectives, research interests, and career plans. Also, discuss your related qualifications, including collegiate, professional, and community activities, as well as any other substantial accomplishments not already mentioned on the application form.

Additional requirements:

A resumé and proof of employment as a safety and/or security professional.
