Program Overview

GW’s M.S. in Government Contracts offers an innovative curriculum that combines both the core principles of government procurement law and business. The program can be completed in as little as eighteen months, with courses being taken evenings or online. Students must complete thirty-six (36) credit hours as follows:

Seven (7) required courses totaling twenty-one (21) credit hours as follows:

  • Formation of Government Contracts
  • Performance of Government Contracts
  • Pricing Issues in Government Contracts
  • Marketing for Government Contracts
  • Introduction to Project and Program Management
  • Financial Accounting


Eleven (11) elective credits chosen from courses in government procurement law (Anti-Corruption and Compliance; State and Local Procurement; Comparative Public Procurement; Federal Grant Law, Foreign Government Contracting; and more) or from a variety of business disciplines (finance, accounting, decision sciences, management, marketing, strategic management and public policy).

A capstone course of four (4) credit hours.

All courses are offered at the Foggy Bottom campus in Washington, D.C. or online.

Standardized test scores:

Either the Graduate Admissions Management Test (GMAT - institutional code QK4-4F-40) or the Graduate Record Examination Test (GRE - institutional code 5246) is required; may be waived for applicants with at least seven (7) years related experience.

Recommendations required:

Two (2) or more recommendations (academic or professional).

Prior academic records:

Transcripts are required from all colleges and universities attended, whether or not credit was earned, the program was completed, or the credit appears as transfer credit on another transcript.  Unofficial transcripts from all colleges and universities attended should be uploaded to your online application.  Official transcripts are required only of applicants who are offered admission.

International applicants should upload the English-language version of their transcripts or a copy of a credentials evaluation.

Statement of purpose:

In a 500 word statement of purpose, describe your career objectives and how the M.S. in Government Contracts will help you attain your goals.

Additional requirements:

A minimum of three (3) years work experience related to government contracts, and a current resume.

International applicants only:

PLEASE NOTE that the minimum English language test scores required by this program are:

  • Academic IETLS: an overall band score of 7.0 with no individual band score below 6.0; or
  • TOEFL: 600 on paper-based or 100 on Internet-based; or
  • Academic PTE: 68
